Product Hunt is not a go-to-market strategy

· 6 min read

Product Hunt is a room full of people who like new tools. Some of them buy tools. Most of them hunt tools. Those are not the same hobby.

Treating PH as your go-to-market is like treating a birthday party as your sales org. You might get a gift. You will not get a quota.

What a launch can do#

  • Put a URL in front of a lot of people in 24 hours
  • Produce comments you can mine for language
  • Give you a badge marketers still like
  • Attract other builders, which is useful only if builders are the buyer

What a launch cannot do#

  • Invent an ICP
  • Fix a headline that describes a category instead of an outcome
  • Follow up with 80 signups who never saw a price
  • Replace the twenty conversations you avoided before launch day

If you have no list of humans and no message that earned replies last week, PH will amplify confusion.

The week before you submit#

DayWork
MondayRewrite the hero so a tired buyer gets it. Price on the page.
Tuesday15 conversations with people who match the ICP. Note the words they use.
WednesdayEmail or DM those people that you are launching Thursday and you want their honest public feedback.
ThursdayLaunch. Reply to every comment for six hours.
FridayWrite to every signup who did not pay. Ask one question: what were you hoping this would replace?

That Friday list is more valuable than the upvote count.

If you already launched and nothing happened#

Do not book a second launch. Take the commenters and upvoters who look like buyers and message them like a person. Most founders never do this. They screenshot the badge and go back to the backlog.

A better definition of GTM at your stage#

Go-to-market is: who you sell to, what you say, where you find them, and what you do every day until money moves.

For a solo founder that usually means one channel, founder-led sales, and a page that does not lie.

Product Hunt can be a day inside that plan. It cannot be the plan.

Scan your URL if you want a version of the plan that assumes you are one person with no audience. Then decide whether PH is even on the calendar.

FAQ

Should I still launch on Product Hunt?

Yes if you can bring early voters and you want the asset (badge, backlinks, a URL people recognize). No if PH is the entire plan.

Why didn’t my featured launch convert?

Visitors arrived curious, not in pain. Your page talked features. There was no follow-up to the people who signed up.

Is Hacker News different?

Slightly. Still a room. Still not a pipeline.
