Founder-led sales for people who have never done a sales call

· 8 min read

Developers treat sales like a different profession. It is not. Early sales is customer development with a price at the end.

You already debug systems. A first-sale motion is a system: inputs (names), process (messages and calls), output (paid or learned).

The motion in one page#

  1. 40 names that match one ICP
  2. 10 outbound touches per weekday
  3. Replies become 20-minute calls or Looms
  4. Every live conversation ends with a yes, a no, or a dated next step
  5. Write down the objection
  6. Change the hero and the opener when the same objection appears three times

That is founder-led sales. There is no CRM required until you lose track of twenty threads.

What to say when you have no practice#

Do not open with your origin story. Open with their situation.

DM

You mentioned [X] in [place]. I’m the person who built [outcome] after dealing with that the ugly way. Can I show you a two-minute clip, or is that already solved?

If they say send it

Send a Loom. Title the file with their problem, not your product name. Last 15 seconds: price and “if you want it, I’ll send a link.”

If they get on a call

Use four questions. Then shut up.

  • What do you do today when [problem] shows up?
  • What have you already tried?
  • What happens if you ignore it for another quarter?
  • If a tool actually did [outcome], who would have to approve [price]?

Then demo only the path that matches their answers. Not the settings page.

Asking for money without melting#

Say the price out loud. Do not apologize.

It’s $49 a month. First ten founders get that rate locked. I can send a checkout link after this call, or we can book Friday if you need to check with [person].

Then stop talking. The silence is not a bug.

If they ask for free access, offer time-boxed paid or a pilot that converts. You can be generous on onboarding and still collect a card.

Handling the four objections you will actually hear#

They sayYou say
“I’ll think about it.”“What would you need to see this week to decide? I can record that part.”
“We already use X.”“Where does X waste your time anyway? If that part is fine, don’t switch.”
“Too early / we’re small.”“That’s who this is for. If you wait until you’re big you’ll build an internal version and hate it.”
“Can you add Y first?”“I can add Y if three of the first ten ask. I won’t block your account on a maybe.”

Write these in a note you keep open. You will freeze the first time otherwise.

After the call#

  • Same day: recap in five lines + link.
  • Two days later: one follow-up.
  • Then drop it.

Volume dies when founders write novels to people who already vanished.

You will feel rude. You are not.#

Asking a person who complained about a problem whether they want it solved is not spam. Spam is blasting 2,000 people with “quick question” and a Calendly.

Personal, relevant, limited volume. That is allowed.

If you want the templates filled with your product’s language, generate the playbook from the URL and steal the sales pack. Then send them. Unsent templates have a 0% close rate.

FAQ

Do I need Zoom sales energy?

No. You need curiosity and a clear ask. Quiet founders close if they listen and then name a price.

Cold email or DMs?

DMs in the community where they already talk, until that well is dry. Email when you have a specific work address and a specific trigger.

How many calls before I hire a salesperson?

Do the first 20–50 yourself. You are collecting the objections a future hire would otherwise invent.
