Claude wrote my GTM plan. I still have no sales.
· 6 min read
You pasted the homepage into Claude and asked for a go-to-market strategy. It gave you positioning, personas, a channel mix, a 90-day calendar, and KPIs. It looked like work a contractor would charge $3,000 for.
Two weeks later you have the same twelve signups.
The model did not fail at English. You failed at noticing that the document contained no names.
What these plans always include#
- “Define your ICP”
- “Build in public on X”
- “Launch on Product Hunt”
- “Start an SEO engine”
- “Partner with communities”
- “Run paid tests once you have a baseline”
That is the average of a thousand SaaS blog posts. It is not false. It is not yours.
What they almost never include#
- The subreddit where your buyer already argues about the workaround
- The sentence that will not sound like an AI wrote it
- Who to message on day one
- What to do when seven people say “cool” and zero ask for a checkout link
- Which channels to ignore so you have time to do the one that matters
A plan that cannot be executed between 8am and 10am on a Wednesday is a school essay.

How to use a model without getting played#
Give it constraints:
- Buyer must be one role, not four
- Output must name places
- Output must include 15 message variants
- Output must forbid ads and SEO for 30 days
- Output must define a scoreboard in conversations, not impressions
Then treat the result as a draft you will edit after five real replies. The replies are the product research. The PDF is not.
The test that exposes a fake plan#
Read the next seven days of tasks. If every task could be copied onto a different startup without changing a noun, it is fake.
| Task | Verdict |
|---|---|
| “Draft three LinkedIn posts about the problem space” | Fake |
| “Reply to this week’s thread in r/devops about flaky deploy notifications with a write-up of how you handled it, no link in the first comment” | Real |
Why founders still generate the essay#
Because an essay feels like motion and a DM feels like risk. The model is a socially acceptable way to stay in the building.
If you already have three of those essays, stop generating a fourth. Take one paragraph that mentions a channel, go to that channel, and talk to people for a week.
If you want the draft tied to your site#
Solofounders.help starts from the URL, not from a blank prompt. The free layer is the diagnosis: what you appear to sell, who the page talks to, why a sale is unlikely. The paid layer is a 30-day sequence. It is still a document. The difference is that it is supposed to be executable on a specific product, and you read the free half before you pay.
It will not send the messages. That part is the job.
FAQ
Are AI GTM generators useless?
They are useful as a first pass on structure. They are useless as a substitute for naming buyers and talking to them.
Should I prompt the model better?
Better prompts help a little. A scraped URL plus a demand that the output include specific communities and DM copy helps more. Execution still sits with you.
Why does the plan mention SEO and ads so early?
Because those words appear in every marketing corpus the model trained on. They are correct for companies with conversion data. They are wrong for customer zero.
